Phoenix Wright (born March 21, 1992) is a 26 year old former defense attorney living in the city of Los Angeles. After passing the Bar in 2016, Wright enjoyed a successful career practicing criminal law, taking on mainly high-profile homicide cases. He is notable for losing only one case in his three years as a lawyer, for only agreeing to take on innocent clients, and for reputedly managing to reveal the true guilty party in every single case brought to court.

Over charges of willfully presenting fabricated evidence in court during the trial of Shadi Enigmar (alias Zak Gramarye), Wright's badge was stripped by the California Bar Association on April 29, 2019.

Personality and General Information

Phoenix is generally very easy-going. On an average day he's even pretty dull; he likes sleeping in, watching TV, surfing the internet, and other laid back activities. He eats relatively well but doesn't work out. He's equally easy-going in his relationships with other people: if someone asks him to go out he'll almost always tag along, but he's not so great about being proactive and making the invitations. Sometimes he'll go for weeks or months at a time without speaking to his friends, but usually when they meet back up it's as if nothing's changed.

However, those people that Phoenix does spend his time with are very close friends, and he's fiercely loyal to them. His dry sense of humor sometimes disguises just how much he cares, but he has been known to go to extreme lengths in defense of his allies. Sometimes his devotion is so great that it leaves him blind to the dangers around, or even the faults of the person in question, and he has gotten burned before. When that happens, his resentment is strong and steady.

Where Phoenix really shines is the courthouse. He has his moments of being completely flustered, confused, and at a loss, but he has a genuinely sharp mind that always sees him through. When he's on a roll, his confidence spikes and he can plow ahead through just about any argument, but when that roll pitters out he's quick to look to his friends for help. His loyalty to his clients and his determination to win are his defining characteristics in the arena of law, and he's earned a pretty good name for himself because of them.

Some other interesting facts about Phoenix include his appreciation of Shakespearean literature (no seriously!), his lack of driver's license (a bike is cheaper and better for the environment!), his tendency to drink cheep beer even though he has almost zero tolerance, and his ability to get along with teenaged girls. He hates heights, is no longer fond of running water, and does not let his clients anywhere near the sofa in the defense lobby. To go anywhere near it is bad luck.

Connections

Family

Parents
Phoenix's parents were a little older than normal when they had him, and are now retired and living in a rest home upstate. He visits them very rarely. It's not that their relationship is strained, they just don't seem to have much in common, and all parties are fine with a long-distance relationship.
Trucy Wright
Little does Phoenix know, he's about to adopt a young girl. He's going to be confused, and determined, and frustrated, and he's going to fall in love with the adorable little squirt. He's going to learn things about himself he didn’t know and do his best to raise her right. But he doesn't know that yet.
Maya Fey
Technically not family, but as close as it gets. Phoenix has been looking after Maya on Mia's behalf for years now, and after all that they've been through she's become closer than a sister to him. Though sometimes her immaturity can be bothersome, her energy motivates him better than almost anything else, and when he's not rolling his eyes at her he's admiring her for her strength.

Now that Maya is the Kurain Master it's not as easy to see her, but he still makes the effort. He's looking forward to seeing her develop into the mature leader (with a heart of burger!) he knows she can be, but at the same time is ready to support her when she needs it.

Pearl Fey
Maya's young cousin, and much like a young cousin to Phoenix as well. He's very fond of her, and does his best to look after her when she's under his care. Sometimes he worries that she's leading too sheltered of a life in Kurain, and being as bright as she is she should be exposed to more opportunities, but it's not his place to interfere. Not like he's ever raised a nine year old girl, after all! Aha! Aha! Aha!

As for the constant "Maya's special someone" treatment, he doesn't want to hurt Pearl's feelings by telling her it's not going to happen, so he just keeps his mouth shut and hopes shell grow out of it eventually. Sooner rather than later--she hits hard for a kid!

Friends

Miles Edgeworth
Though they spent a short time as rivals, Phoenix considers him to be one of his closest friends. From the moment Edgeworth stood up for him way back in elementary school Phoenix formed a bond of trust that has not wavered in all those years. But because Phoenix believes in Edgeworth so strongly, he takes it all the more personally when they disagree. Thankfully they haven't lately had any fights bad enough that Phoenix has had to declare Edgeworth "DEAD TO HIM," but if it happens in the future it won't be the first time.

But seriously, now that Edgeworth is not being a jerk, Phoenix looks up to him a great deal. He even takes a bit of personal pride in the fact that Edgeworth has "cleaned up" very nicely since his days as a demon prosecutor, in part thanks to him. They have very different methods of approaching a case or any problem, but Phoenix still values his friend's input and knows he can always count on his support. Case in point, the recent misadventures at Hazakura Temple. When Phoenix needed help the most Edgeworth was there to help, and some part of him believes that will always be the case.

When proven wrong, some (unwarranted) bitterness is sure to follow...but he'll get over it. The two of them have been friends for too long and been through too much together to let a little badge get between them, right?

Larry Butz
Phoenix's other "best friend." The pair met back in elementary school, and after Edgeworth left to live with von Karma, Larry was pretty much the only close friend Phoenix had. They have very different work ethics, senses of humor, levels of ambition, and tastes in women, but somehow they still manage to have a good time. Larry may be a flake and a trouble-maker, but he's honest and loyal, and that's what matters most to Phoenix.
Dick Gumshoe
Though they're not exactly friends per se, Phoenix sees so much of Gumshoe that they've developed a kind of working relationship, and even a trust. Gumshoe has helped Phoenix out a lot in the past, which he appreciates, and if the occasion arose for Phoenix to repay him he would without a second thought. If only he was a bit brighter, maybe they wouldn't find themselves on opposites sides so much...?
Mia Fey
Phoenix's old mentor, who has remained in his life even after her death. Phoenix thinks of her as the best defense attorney he's ever known, and has the utmost respect for her. Having her in his corner gave him much needed confidence in many cases and he'll never forget the lessons she taught him. However, since 3-5 he's come to realize that he can't depend on her help forever, and has not asked Maya to channel her for him since. The dead have to rest in peace sometime...
Ema
Phoenix has a special place in his heart for teenaged girls. You can't solve crime without one!
Iris
Iris is something of a complicated issue for Phoenix at the moment. They were in love through college, and now that he's met her again and learned the truth, those feelings still well up when he thinks about her. However, he's not the same person he was then, and in many ways neither is she. He's not sure if he's ready to pursue a relationship with her again, or if he wants that, or if she wants that. Either way, he's visited her a few times while she's been in detention, and will never stop caring about her. Whether they have a future together is another matter.

Enemies

Dahlia
The woman who hurt Phoenix the most. After their "relationship" in college turned to betrayal and murder Phoenix was devastated, and couldn't help but be a bit more guarded in his approach towards romance afterwards. As glad as he is to find out that he wasn't wrong about the girl he loved, Dahlia still hurt him and after all her selfish acts he feels towards her nothing but contempt and pity.
Klavier Gavin
The man who stole Phoenix's badge from him--and yes, he does see it that way. Because Phoenix's investigation into his disbarment is only just underway, Klavier is still his prime suspect, and it's going to take a lot to get him to change his mind.
All the people Phoenix has put away
Phoenix has gotten a lot of people found guilty of murder in his short career as defense attorney. Most of them he had no personal grudge against, except for the wrongs they committed against his friends. Thankfully they're all in prison and he doesn't have to worry about them anymore! Though...he is sometimes guilty of poking at them from the safety of LJ.

Other

Franziska von Karma
Sometimes she's cute when she's angry, but most times it's not worth making her angry to see it!

Being Edgeworth's "little sister" Phoenix feels like they're connected via association, and he doesn't bear hear any ill will for their fights throughout JFA. When forced to, they even can get along fairly well. Being yet another teenaged girl in his life, he hopes to see her mature into a proper prosecutor just like Edgeworth did.

Diego Armando
Another person from his latest case that Phoenix is not sure how to deal with. Though Phoenix understands Diego's motivations in wanting to avenge Mia and protect Maya (motivations that have driven him to extremes as well) he can't help but feel that Diego went about it in the worst possible way, and people suffered because of it. But like it or not Diego has ties to Maya and Pearl, and for their sakes he's willing to get over his trepidation.
Phoenix's Clients
It would take a looooong time to list all of Phoenix's clients and exactly how he felt about them, so let's just say that he has very vivid memories of every one (some more pleasant than others). Though he doesn't keep up a personal relationship with all of them, they each represent and important event in his life, and he wonders about them from time to time.

Background

Phoenix grew up in a middle class family with fairly normal, easy going parents. Being a little shy and a little dorky, he had some trouble making friends as a kid, and thus latched on like a leech when Edgeworth and Larry turned up as potential best buds. Oh, the summer of 2001...! He thought they'd be inseparable forever.

That December, Edgeworth transferred schools. It was a tough lesson for Phoenix, but he still had Larry, and they remained close friends through the rest of their school years. In college he met Dahlia (aka Iris) and fell in love for the first time, and clung to her with even greater blind tenacity than his childhood friends. But that didn't work out either.

That's when Phoenix met Mia, and became her devoted student! So really, Phoenix's history has been one of hopping from one very small group of devoted friends to the next.

However, during Phoenix's time as a lawyer, he managed to open his horizons a little. Now he has a large group of acquaintances, many of which are devoted to him in ways he doesn't fully appreciate. As grateful as he is towards the people that have helped him, it doesn't always occur to him that he's saved the lives of a dozen strangers. He's just been living day to day, enjoying the ride, learning more about himself and letting more and more people into his life.

Oh yeah, and he's won a lot of cases. Did you know he has his own series of games!?
