The Chinese couple….
Sally Po appears to be Wufei's "matched female."
When Sally meets Wufei for the first time, she immediately understands the depth of his psyche! (How does she do that!?) (ep )
Wufei saves Sally from the thugs!
Sally says, "I know that, right now, healing your heart is more important than my life."
Wufei smiled at her. How many times do we see that??
Wufei and Sally spend an extended amount of time together.
When they meet again in space, it's partially Sally that convinces Wufei to join up with the others.
After Endless Waltz, Sally finds Wufei and convinces him to come work with her for the Preventers.
Sally was there when Wufei needed her the most. She found him during an irresolute time and was able to get him back on track—she gave him his purpose back. To Wufei, Sally is a mature female figure that Wufei responds to. Wufei needs someone strong and dedicated to match him, while at the same time someone tender, to help him through his own problems. Sally understands him very well, and could help him through his own insecurity. To Sally, Wufei is someone whom she can understand and help. Helping Gundam pilots is what Sally does best! Call it excessive maternal instinct. And she's got plenty to work with if she stays with Wufei. More importantly, Wufei has the potential to be a very strong person, not only on the surface, as he is now. Sally respects that kind of eternal strength, making Wufei an ideal person for her.
What evidence is
there that it wouldn't work?
Sally Po is just as eager to help the other Gundam pilots (esp Heero) as she is to help Wufei.
When Wufei and Sally meet up again in space, he regards her coldly and doesn't accept her invitation until after he's fought in Wing Zero.
You don't date someone you work with!
Sally is older than him. I know this debate is inconsequential, but it deserves to be mentioned. Wufei is 15, and Sally is 19 (though she acts like she's at least 30). And she is definitely ahead of him in terms of maturity. Wufei doesn't always react well to people telling him what to do, or coddling him—he needs an equal, not a mom. Sally has a tendency to really "take care" of the people she's with, and that's going to get on anyone's nerves—especially if they work together. Someone as stubborn and proud as Wufei isn't going to take being ordered around for long.
Also, think of the age difference there: a college sophomore dating a high school freshman. Though that won't matter in a while, he's still only fifteen—no offense to fifteen year olds. As a college student myself, cradle robbing doesn't suit me.
Sally was there when Wufei needed her the most. She found him during an irresolute time and was able to get him back on track—unfortunately, this argument works for and against them as a couple. Wufei responded to Sally in very difficult situations: after his loss to Trieze, and after the destruction of his colony. They haven't had any interaction other than during the times when he was unsure of himself. That can't be confused with honest affection.
Besides, Sally hasn't ever focused entirely on Wufei. She knew Heero for only a very short time before understanding and trusting him deeply. She went through a lot—trying to destroy Sandrock, salvaging the Heavyarms and Wing Gundams, joining Peacemillion—for his sake. Her maturity allows her to understand the people she comes in contact with relatively quickly, which then compels her to help them. It was only natural that she would help Wufei, which is easily mistaken for attraction. She may just be trying to help him. She doesn’t treat him any different than the other pilots—except in that she invited him to join the Preventers, an offer not given to his peers. But then, Wufei was the only one who was insecure enough at the time to need her support: he has no home (unlike Trowa), no family (unlike Quatre), no job (unlike Duo), and no direction (unlike Heero). His joining Mariemea is proof enough that he lacked a strong loyalty or plan for his life. Once again, he needed someone to step in and give him a goal.
In conclusion
Since Sally Po is kept as a very mature character who never shows uncertainty or emotional distress, it is difficult to make assumptions in her feelings towards Wufei as opposed to the other pilots. She makes no romantic advances toward him—and I'm not sure if Wufei would welcome them or not. Like I've said in all the other Wufei sections, he needs time to grow, and he's not going to be able to rely on Sally forever. Eventually he'll have to do the work on his own, and he'll reject her help. In any case, Wufei has shown no interest in any kind of relationship. If Sally and Wufei are going to get together, it'll be up to fan created circumstances, and even then I can't imagine their romantic life being smooth. She's too motherly and he's too stubborn to accept her parenting for long.
