I've never seen this pair before, so I'll keep this brief. To Quatre, Wufei is one of them. Though they don't have the connection shared by, say, Quatre and Trowa, Quatre respects Wufei's skill and his individuality. Even as the leader he doesn’t try to hold Wufei back, which I'm sure he appreciates. To Wufei, Quatre is the leader of the team. He respects Quatre's decisions and follows his advice without question because he knows he can trust Quatre. So as a team, they work well together.
What evidence is there that it wouldn't work?
I think of all the pilots, these two spend the least amount of time together. They don’t even meet face to face until the last dozen eps of the show, once all the pilots have been gathered. Though they are a team, neither shows any interest in the other. More than that, Wufei is typically a violent person who can't let go of battle, while Quatre wants only peace. The two of them together would probably fight endlessly, unless one could conceded to the other. And this may seem inconsequential to love, but would Wufei really put up with being broadcasted as the Winner Company's Chinese homosexual lover? Can you imagine the kind of press he'd get? Especially for a soldier that fought with Mariemea. The best thing for Wufei after the war is to find a quieter kind of life, not to be dragged out and forced in front of people.
In conclusion
Wufei and Quatre are better off as friends.
