The Perfect Soldiers!!

What evidence is there that it could work?

Trowa rescues Heero from the battle and cares for him for a month (ep 11-12)

Trowa follows Heero on his Noventa hunt, though it had nothing to do with the mission (ep 12-18)

Trowa protected Heero from Quatre (ep 25)

Heero talks to Trowa more than he’ll talk to the others

Heero and Trowa spend a lot of time together while Heero recuperates after self-destructing.  Both are highly trained soldiers (out of all the pilots, they seem to have the most extensive array of skills, having been involved in battle their entire lives).  They stand out among the other pilots as working as an excellent team (not only on Earth during the Noventa hunt and the duel with Zechs, but in space when piloting the Mercurius and Vayette).  They know that they can depend on the other, and don’t have to look out for each other as they do with the other pilots (Duo and Quatre especially).  They both know that the mission comes first, too, so there wouldn’t be any issues in laying aside a relationship when it came time to battle.

To Heero, Trowa is a comrade.  He accepts Trowa’s help more quickly that Duo’s because he can—Trowa is more like him, understands the seriousness and importance of the mission better, and he knows Trowa’s skills are nearly a match for his own.  He doesn’t have to worry about Trowa getting into trouble.  He even respects him for his skill.  As said earlier in the Heero and Relena section, Heero needs someone who will be on equal footing with him, and Trowa can live up to that.

To Trowa, Heero is someone who’s better than him.  All his life Trowa has been known as a perfect soldier who lives only for battle (as said by Ralph Kurt, an old acquaintance of his, during Blind Target).  He’s always been the best.  He believes that in order to succeed in battle and survive, one must bare no emotion and remain calm and detached at all times: only the mission matters.  However, Heero proves that he’s just as good of a pilot, emotions intact.  Trowa has a lot of experience in battle—someone who fights for emotions usually gets careless and is killed.  However, Heero is stronger than that.  Trowa seems to admire everything Heero does, from his actions after Noventa, to his fair duel with Zechs, to even looking out for Duo (Endless Waltz).  He sees Heero as a real perfect soldiers, who is able to accomplish his missions while at the same time not compromising his emotions or ideals.  As someone who does not make use of his feelings for fear of endangering his duty, Trowa greatly respects Heero’s very straightforward and honest approach to fighting.  There’s a lot he could learn from him.

What evidence is there that it wouldn’t work?

Spending time with someone (especially in forced circumstances) is not the basis for a relationship.  So many times I’ve seen “They were together for a month.  Of course something happened.”  It doesn’t work that way, folks.

Sure Trowa and Heero were together for a long time.  They work well together—why wouldn’t they?  And like I said, Trowa is curious about Heero’s ability to balance duty and emotion.  The truth is, however, everything mentioned above that proves their compatibility as a couple also could be used in favor of a very strong friendship.  Working well together is different than physical attraction.  Heero has had no intimate encounters thus far, and so if he were attracted to Trowa it’s likely that he would have acted with some uncertainty towards him.  Likewise, whether or not you believe Trowa is a rape victim, it’s known that Trowa has never sought out any kind of relationship of a physical sort.  But the two pilots are very open with each other, without any hesitation, embarrassment, uncertainty, anything, even from the beginning of their friendship.  Their behavior towards each other does not change over the course of the show.  Were they “developing feelings” towards each other, their attitudes would have altered at least slightly.

However, Heero’s attitude toward Relena (and Trowa’s toward Quatre, for that matter) changes as he gets to know her better.  Relena is the one that pushes Heero forward, giving him a stronger purpose.  Quatre and Catherine show Trowa a reason to live.  Heero and Trowa do not interfere with each other’s lives, do not offer personal advice.  At one point Heero even says to Quatre, “Go to Trowa.”  He knows that Quatre is the one that will be able to help Trowa, more than himself.

In Conclusion

Heero and Trowa may work as an excellent team when it comes to fighting, and are loyal friends, but there is no evidence to suggest that they were involved in any way during the show.  More importantly, the connection between Heero and the other characters, and Trowa to Quatre, suggests that this pair wasn’t meant to be more than comrades in arms.

On to Heero and Quatre
