What evidence is there that it could work?
They don’t seem to mind being locked in a cell together.
Duo and Wufei don’t spend any extended amount of time together during the show, except for the above mentioned incident. After that they split up, and don’t meet again until all the pilots have been collected. Other than what took place within the cell on the Lunar Base, I can’t recall Duo and Wufei having ever engaged in a complete conversation. Not that they argue, as the fan basis suggests—they simply don’t have enough in common to chat casually. There is no indication that Wufei is ever seriously annoyed or angered by Duo, or that Duo teases him constantly. For the most part they just seem to be members of the same team. This fact, though it may sound discouraging, is actually a compliment towards Duo: Wufei, with his habit of looking down on those who shouldn’t be fighting, never criticizes Duo. This would imply that, at the least, he respects Duo as a comrade.
To Wufei, Duo is another pilot with whom he can work. Though one would expect him to get annoyed with Duo’s seemingly unfaltering optimism, he doesn’t. He recognizes Duo’s skill as a pilot, and doesn’t mind the exuberant attitude; after all, Meiran was even more extreme. To Duo, Wufei is another member of the group. If anything, he’ll watch Wufei’s back and expect the same in return.
What evidence is there that it wouldn’t work?
They don’t really spend any amount of time together in the show, so it’s difficult to say how they would interact with each other in a normal setting. There’s just nothing between them to signify anything other than two guys on the same side. Considering the fact that Wufei was married and Duo has an attachment to Hilde…the pair really has no outstanding bond. (Even if you don’t subscribe to Duo and Hilde, Duo reacts much more to Heero and Quatre than to Wufei).
In Conclusion
I have no idea where this pair came from, and find it highly unlikely that they would ever get together in a relationship—neither of them are ready for that anyway. However, they’ll always be comrades.
